Sora video generation was discontinued on April 26, 2026 (the API stops on September 24). On July 9, 2026 ChatGPT moved to GPT-5.6, which ships in three variants: Luna, Terra, and Sol. On September 3, 2026, OpenAI unveiled the next flagship model, GPT-6 Astra, and began rolling it out to enterprise customers first.

GPT-6 Astra announced

On September 3, 2026, OpenAI announced its next flagship model, "GPT-6 Astra." It claims state-of-the-art performance on computer use, browsing, software engineering, and science, scoring 98% on FrontierMath Tier 4 and 99.9% on ARC-AGI-3. It's rolling out first to enterprise customers with Daybreak access, then over the following days to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plus the API and AWS. Enterprise admins enable it per workspace, and it ships off by default.

Migration to GPT-5.6

GPT-5.6 became generally available on July 9, 2026 in a three-model lineup (Luna / Terra / Sol). The GPT-5.6 Sol flagship is available on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise, while the higher-effort Sol Pro is reserved for Pro and Enterprise. On August 6, GPT-5.6 Luna also became the default model for Free and Go.

Ads on Free and Go plans (US)

Starting in February 2026, OpenAI began testing in-conversation ads for US users on the Free and Go plans. Paid Plus and above remain ad-free.

Deep Research

Generates long-form reports by crawling dozens to hundreds of web sources. Limited quota on Plus, effectively unlimited on Pro. Outputs include citations, making it popular for research and reporting workflows.

Custom GPTs / GPT Store

Users can create and share their own GPTs. The GPT Store hosts millions of Custom GPTs and is available to Plus and above.

Sora video generation — discontinued

Sora video generation inside ChatGPT was shut down on April 26, 2026, and the Sora 2 API is removed on September 24, 2026. No successor has been announced.

Voice mode powered by GPT-Live

In July 2026 the voice experience moved onto "GPT-Live", a full-duplex model that lets you interrupt and talk over the assistant like a phone call instead of waiting for turn-taking. It reached the Windows and macOS desktop apps on July 24.

Plans & Pricing

The lineup is Free, Go, Plus, two Pro tiers ($100 and $200), Business, and Enterprise — Plus and above unlock GPT-5.6 Sol, while Pro and Enterprise add the higher-effort Sol Pro. GPT-6 Astra is expected to roll into existing plans at no extra cost, but on Enterprise it stays unavailable until an admin turns it on.
