Overview
Udio is an AI music generation service launched in 2024 by former Google DeepMind researchers. Alongside Suno, it defines the "text-to-full-song" category, and is especially praised for vocal naturalness and audio clarity. Its investors include Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) and artists such as will.i.am and Common.
In October 2025 Udio settled with Universal Music Group (UMG) and agreed to co-build a new music platform trained on licensed data. Udio is currently in that transition: the existing model still generates, but output is confined to a "walled garden" and downloads of audio, video and stems are disabled.
Key Features
1. High-quality prompt-to-song generation
Prompts combining genre, mood, instruments and era generate roughly 2-minute tracks with clear verse/chorus structure. Vocal pronunciation and overall mix quality are widely praised.
2. Extend and Remix
- Extend: lengthen an initial 30-40 second clip before or after, section by section
- Remix: regenerate an existing track in a different style
- Section-level editing lets you build songs iteratively.
3. Custom lyrics and instrumentals
You can supply your own lyrics, or generate instrumentals only. Combining genre tags (e.g. "dreamy synthwave, female vocal, 1980s") gives fine-grained control over the sound.
4. Community and playlists
Udio's site includes a community layer where users listen to, like, and comment on each other's tracks.

Credit allowances were raised as part of the UMG partnership — while, during the same transition, downloads are disabled on every tier.

Credits reset monthly and do not roll over. Annual billing saves 20%.
Rights and Litigation Status
The UMG case settled in October 2025, and UMG artists and songwriters can join the new platform on an opt-in basis. That platform is due to launch during 2026, at which point downloads are expected to return. Legal exposure is not fully cleared, though: Sony Music re-sued Udio in July 2026 over an alleged 30,117 recordings, with the court directing it to proceed as a separate case.
