Overview
Suno is an AI music generation service that produces full songs with vocals and instrumentation from a short text prompt in seconds. Founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2023, Suno positions itself around the idea that "anyone can make music." Given a genre, mood, and optional lyrics, it outputs a polished track complete with vocals, drums, guitars and synths.
The current model is v5.5, released on March 26, 2026. Beyond audio quality, its centerpiece is a set of personalization features — Voices, Custom Models and My Taste — aimed at letting a creator's own identity come through in the output.
Key Features
1. Text-to-full-song generation
A short description like "lo-fi hip hop about rainy Tokyo nights" yields a 2-4 minute track with intro, verse, chorus and outro. Custom mode lets you specify lyrics, style tags and a title separately.
2. Voices — sing on your own tracks
Upload roughly 60 seconds of dry vocals and Suno extracts a "vocal fingerprint" it can apply to later generations, so the same vocalist carries across an entire concept album. Available to Pro and Premier subscribers.
3. Custom Models and My Taste
Upload six or more of your own tracks to fine-tune v5.5 into a personal model — up to three per account. My Taste is a free personalization layer for all users that learns your preferences and applies them automatically.
4. Lyric generation and multilingual vocals
Suno can auto-write lyrics or take yours, and supports vocals in English, Japanese, Spanish and many other languages. Pronunciation in non-English languages has improved meaningfully across versions.
5. Stems, Extend, and Cover
- Stems: download separate vocal and instrumental tracks
- Extend: continue an existing song with AI-generated sections
- Cover / Remix: reinterpret your own melody in a new style
6. Mobile apps and Studio 2.0
Suno offers iOS/Android apps plus Suno Studio, a browser-based DAW for arranging generated songs. Studio 2.0, rebuilt on August 13, 2026, adds MIDI, audio effects, built-in wavetable synths, automation and a beta chat bar for generating instruments. Premier subscribers can export 32-bit/48kHz multitracks and stems from Studio without limits.

Each song costs 5 credits, so Pro covers roughly 500 generations a month and Premier around 2,000.
From September 3, 2026, a download is treated as a license to release that song commercially rather than a plain export, and the per-plan caps above apply. Generating still works normally within your credit allowance.
Rights and Litigation Status
Warner Music dropped its suit and settled in November 2025, agreeing to co-develop a licensed model and to transfer the concert-data business Songkick to Suno. On August 12, 2026 Suno signed a global licensing deal with BMG as well — both are artist opt-in and cover training data and generated output alike. Sony Music and Universal Music, however, are still litigating, and in May 2026 they moved to expand the case from 560 to 61,026 recordings. Suno is also rolling out audio watermarking and fingerprinting via Audible Magic and Musixmatch's Sentinel.
Suno has said it will retire all current models — v5.5 included — when the label-partnered "licensed model" ships. Launch is targeted for sometime in 2026, but the name, pricing and migration path remain unannounced.

- ❌ Lyrical nuance (rhyme, wordplay) still lags human lyricists
