game-ready

The "cheap and fast" tier of generative 3D now ships meshes that drop straight into a game engine. Tripo AI's Smart Mesh P2.0 Preview, shipped August 28, generates native quad topology up to 25,000 quads. Until now, production-ready quality meant switching to the pricier flagship H3.1 — that split is starting to close.

Why It Matters Now

The "cheap tier"
became the delivery line

Until early this month, Tripo AI's Smart Mesh line was the budget tier: cheap and fast, but "one more conversion step away" from game delivery. Its native output was triangle-only, so any project that needed clean, riggable quad topology had to switch to the pricier, slower flagship H3.1.

That changed on August 28. Tripo AI's official X post and blog announcement introduced Smart Mesh P2.0 Preview, which generates native quad topology up to 25,000 quads (up to 50,000 triangles in the triangle mode). 3D-industry outlet Fabbaloo independently reported the same resolution generated in seconds.

What matters is that the meaning of "the cheap tier" itself has shifted, from fast-but-rough to fast-and-delivery-ready. The quality gap that used to separate the budget model from H3.1 has narrowed considerably.

Tripo's models now form three tiers: P1 (budget), P2.0 Preview (new, game-ready), and H3.1 (organic detail).

Tripo's H3.1, released in March 2026, targets an order-of-magnitude higher density — up to 2 million faces — built for hero characters and close-up cinematic shots that need real organic detail. P2.0 Preview isn't trying to take over that territory; instead it fills a gap that used to fall through the cracks: delivering mid-weight, mass-produced assets entirely within the budget tier.

The official X announcement was blunt: "Native quad topology — Up to 50K triangles / 25K quads. Built for games and real-time pipelines. Everyone gets 2 free generations." Texture-synthesis and model-architecture details weren't disclosed, but the selectable quad/triangle modes and the two free generations for every user are confirmed, first-party facts.

Switch the model

In Tripo Studio's generation panel, set the model to "Smart Mesh P2.0 Preview" and switch on the "Quad Mesh Output" toggle.

Receive the quad mesh

Output arrives as an FBX with native quad topology, alongside a GLB preview for the browser viewer. Leave the toggle off and it still generates triangle-only meshes up to 50,000 faces as before.

Straight into the engine

Import the FBX directly into Unity, Unreal, or Godot — no retopology round-trip — and move straight into rigging or LOD work.

The payoff looks different depending on your role.

Engineers: no more retopo round-trips

Manual quad conversion and UV re-unwrapping drop out of the loop, cutting how many passes it takes to get from generation into Unity or Unreal. The 25,000-face cap still leaves room to decimate further for mobile targets.

Designers: mass-produce mid-weight assets

Background props and mid-weight character prototypes can now be churned out cheaply without touching H3.1. Because the quads already arrive clean, work in Blender or Maya can start from a real editing baseline instead of a cleanup pass.

PMs: rethink the H3.1 budget split

A budget that assumed "everything goes through H3.1" can shift toward mass-produced assets on P2.0 Preview and reserve H3.1 only for hero pieces. Factor in that the per-generation cost rises from 60 to 70 credits.

Next Steps

What to do next

The first move is to spend the two free generations on an actual production model. Spec sheets and real-world pipeline fit are two different things, so the fastest path is to check quad quality hands-on against a rigged character or a representative prop.

Second, if your pipeline defaulted to H3.1, it's worth auditing asset types to see which ones "P2.0 Preview is now good enough for." Background props, NPCs, and mid-weight vehicles that never get a close-up are strong candidates to move over. Third, keep watching for the moment the "Preview" label comes off — pricing and the face-count cap may well change at general availability.

Caveats

Reasons not to get too excited

First, this is still a "Preview," not a final release — the 70-credit price and the 25,000-face cap could both change at GA. Second, assets that genuinely need organic detail — hero characters, close-up cinematic shots — still call for H3.1's up-to-2-million-face density; P2.0 Preview isn't replacing it. Third, "native quad" doesn't guarantee hand-authored-level rigging quality or edge flow every time, so mass production still doesn't remove the need for per-asset QA.
