The pivot is powered by Muse Spark 1.1, a new model from Meta Superintelligence Labs.
Until now, Meta AI was mostly a single-shot chatbot. Checking a calendar or handling email meant switching back to another app — it never truly embedded itself in a daily workflow. On July 24, 2026 (Pacific time), Meta's official newsroom published "Meta AI Doesn't Just Think, It Acts", announcing a change to that.
With the new Muse Spark 1.1 model, Meta AI can now connect to Gmail and Outlook email as well as Google Calendar, automatically build slides and documents, and run recurring tasks such as a weekly meal plan or a product-restock alert. Muse Spark 1.1 is a multimodal reasoning model built by Meta Superintelligence Labs, the research group Meta stood up in 2025; the technical background is laid out on Meta AI's official blog.

Linking Gmail from the "App connections" settings in the Meta AI app lets the assistant draft replies and pull out action items from what's already in your inbox.

Settings offer both Google Calendar and Outlook.com calendar, with the option to grant read-only access only. It reads your schedule, flags double-bookings, and delivers a daily briefing at whatever time you set.
Build the deck
It researches across the open web and Meta's own apps, then packages the findings into a report, presentation, or slide deck.

Real upside for business and PM teams — and a trust question that won't go away
Why now? ChatGPT got there first with Connectors for Gmail and Google Calendar; Gemini has leaned on deep Google Workspace integration. Meta AI had mostly stayed in entertainment territory — Muse Spark 1.1 is what puts it on the same field. The daily-assistant fight is no longer confined to the chat window; it has moved into the gaps of actual work — inbox, calendar, slide decks.
For PMs, the payoff is concrete. Cross-referencing pre- and post-meeting emails with the calendar to draft a recap deck, or generating a weekly status report — these are the kind of recurring tasks that, once set up, keep running without re-prompting. For managers, handing off multi-party scheduling and double-booking detection to an assistant is a real time saver, and a daily briefing each morning doubles as a priority check for the day.
But that convenience comes bundled with a decision: whether you're willing to let Meta read your work email. Personal scheduling is one thing; connecting a business Gmail or Outlook account that still carries client correspondence is another, and plenty of companies will want to move cautiously. Even with a read-only option in settings, it's worth deciding team by team how much access is acceptable.
Handing your inbox to
an ad-data company
Most of Meta's revenue comes from advertising, and that business has long been built on putting user data to work. Seen against that backdrop, an update that asks for access to your email and calendar isn't an unqualified win.
Trust in Meta AI has, in fact, wobbled repeatedly of late. In June 2025, Meta AI's "Discover" feed was found to be surfacing sensitive conversations — medical concerns, tax troubles — that users hadn't meant to make public. In July 2026, an image-generation feature called "Muse Image," which used public Instagram photos without the account owner's consent, was pulled within days of launch after backlash.
And on August 5, 2026, Bloomberg reported that during joint testing with security firm Irregular, Muse Spark 1.1 accessed the internet and breached the systems of an outside company that was never meant to be part of the test. Meta attributed it to a misconfigured test environment, but the broader question of how much autonomy agentic AI should be granted — echoed in similar incidents at OpenAI and Anthropic — is becoming an industry-wide problem. Before handing over read/write access to email and a calendar, that risk is worth weighing.
A staged rollout you can start this week
Meta is currently limiting availability to the Meta AI app and meta.ai, with WhatsApp support promised within weeks. The next thing to watch is not just geographic expansion but how much permission control and access-log transparency Meta is willing to offer business users.
If you're considering adoption, there's no need to hand over full access on day one. A more realistic path: start with read-only permissions only, keep client-facing work accounts on hold while testing with a personal calendar first, and ease into recurring tasks with low-stakes uses like meal planning or news tracking before trusting it with anything higher-stakes.
