Can ChatGPT clear the
last mile of deck-making?
OpenAI's acquisition of AI-presentation startup NextSlide came to light on August 8, 2026. It's a move to close a long-standing gap — ChatGPT could write the words, but never quite finish the deck — by folding in a team that built exactly that.
Eight months of silence
The announcement landed on August 8, 2026. The deal itself had quietly closed months earlier.
OpenAI acquired AI-presentation startup NextSlide and reportedly plans to build native slide generation directly into ChatGPT. Per TechCrunch's reporting, NextSlide had built a product that turned prompts, notes, documents, or research into a polished, editable presentation; the deal closed undisclosed in price earlier in 2026, with only the public announcement arriving months late.
Founder Ahmed Beshry started NextSlide in April 2025 and, just eleven months later in March 2026, had already joined OpenAI to work on the ChatGPT team. It's his second exit — he previously co-founded smart-cart startup Caper AI, which sold to Instacart in 2021. NextSlide's own site now shows nothing but a short farewell note, where Beshry wrote that "the NextSlide team is now at OpenAI, helping build ChatGPT... we're excited to continue pursuing that same mission: building AI products that help people create, communicate, and turn their ideas into meaningful work."

the workflow next door
NextSlide isn't a one-off. Over the past year, OpenAI has been folding small specialist teams into ChatGPT one after another.
OpenAI was reportedly already testing agents that generate presentations and spreadsheets inside a ChatGPT conversation as early as summer 2025 — compatible with Microsoft's file formats but independent of Microsoft's own apps. The Next Web's analysis frames this as OpenAI "assembling an office suite one acqui-hire at a time." A Mac-resident assistant (Sky), a budgeting app (Roi), a conversational-infrastructure company (Context.ai), a recommendation engine (Crossing Minds), and an analytics platform (Statsig, bought for $1.1B) — ChatGPT is turning from a single chat window into a gravity well that keeps pulling in adjacent work. NextSlide is just the latest piece.
Specialists aren't obsolete yet
Integration doesn't instantly make a dedicated player like Gamma unnecessary.

Who feels it, and how
The mix of upside and risk shifts a lot depending on your role.
Business & ops
The cost structure of deck-making could shift. Worth revisiting whether Gamma/Beautiful.ai subscriptions are still needed at renewal time — but this is still a "team, not a feature" stage, so cancelling now would be premature.
Marketing & design
Turning a pitch or campaign brief straight into a first-draft deck inside ChatGPT speeds up launches. But brand-critical, client-facing decks will likely still lean on Gamma or manual polish for a while yet.
PM & product
Going straight from meeting notes or a spec doc to a roadmap deck or stakeholder update compresses reporting time. This is the group that benefits most from ChatGPT's document reading and deck-building sitting in the same thread.
What to do right now
Don't cancel your specialist tools yet
What's confirmed is that NextSlide's team joined OpenAI — ChatGPT has no shipped native slide feature yet. Treat Gamma/Beautiful.ai subscriptions as still-needed and just start an inventory review.
Split by use case
Use ChatGPT for internal drafts and rough cuts from meeting notes; keep brand-sensitive, external-facing decks on a dedicated tool like Gamma for now.
Wait for the actual product announcement
Once supported formats (pptx export or not), pricing, and rollout scope are public, redo the switching-cost math. Right now this is still a stated direction, not a shipped feature.
The optimistic read isn't the whole story
Specialist rival Gamma just raised a Series B at a $2.1B valuation in November 2025, and many observers still consider it ahead on brand control and export polish. Meanwhile, an earlier mover, Tome, shut down its consumer presentation product in March 2025, with its team moving to B2B sales-intelligence startup Lightfield — a reminder that "AI makes your slides" isn't a market everyone wins.
There's also the Microsoft question. As Dataconomy's coverage notes, Microsoft is both OpenAI's largest investor and the company behind PowerPoint and Copilot. How far a native ChatGPT slide feature is allowed to go will likely be a negotiation within that relationship. And above all, what's confirmed so far is only a team integration — the shipping timeline, supported formats, and rollout scope for a native feature all remain undisclosed. Reading "acquisition" as "victory" is premature.
