Excel, PowerPoint, Cowork, and more can now call Claude Opus 4.8 — bringing complex multi-step and long-horizon agentic workflows into the M365 ecosystem.
Before
M365 Copilot had been primarily Microsoft-model-driven; enterprise teams handling complex multi-step tasks reported hitting its ceiling.
Microsoft 365 Copilot excelled at assist tasks — formula suggestions in Excel, email summarization in Outlook — but users running multi-step, long-horizon workflows reported running into capability limits. Feedback consistently pointed to the need for a more powerful underlying model for complex scenarios.
Enterprise teams who wanted Claude's capability had to manage a separate Anthropic contract and keep it outside Microsoft's governance framework — a compliance concern for many security-conscious organizations.

Organizations already holding M365 licenses can access Claude Opus 4.8 without a separate Anthropic contract. Because it operates inside Microsoft's security and compliance framework, approval from CISOs and compliance teams is typically easier to obtain than for standalone third-party AI tools.
