In its first Project Glasswing report on May 26, Anthropic signaled that the top-tier Mythos class would "go public once the safeguards are in place." But it kept the timing under wraps. The name Fable 5 even leaked ahead of any official announcement as a model ID in the SDK, leaving the community guessing about what it could possibly be.
On June 9, 2026 (US time), Anthropic officially released "Claude Fable 5"—the first public offering of the Mythos class—alongside "Claude Mythos 5," a higher tier for cyber-defense partners. Capability that only a few researchers could touch has dropped straight into the hands of Claude Pro and Max users. That is the heart of this update.

Fable and Mythos:
what's the difference?
Both are built on the same Mythos class, split by how they are distributed and which capabilities are unlocked. The one anyone can use is the former.
Fable 5 — for everyone
A model anyone on a Claude Pro or Max plan can use. It is said to surpass the current Opus 4.8 generation across software engineering, knowledge work, and vision. Think of it as a flat upgrade to your everyday coding and research.
Mythos 5 — for research partners
A higher tier distributed to cyber-defense partners through Project Glasswing. It unlocks advanced research capabilities, such as autonomous design of drug candidates. It is not reachable from ordinary apps or APIs.
A shared foundation
Both rest on the same Mythos class. The difference is "to whom, and how far." Fable goes wide, leaning to the safe side; Mythos goes deep, but only to vetted partners—that is the design philosophy.
About 5% of the time,
it quietly falls back
Fable 5 ships with a "safety valve" that lets the capability open up widely. That valve is a roughly 5% fallback.
Every request to Fable 5 passes through a safety classifier. If it is judged clean, Fable 5 answers at its full capability; but roughly 5% of the time, the design quietly falls back to the prior Opus 4.8. On top of that, high-risk areas such as cyber, biological, and chemical work have their responses blocked altogether. It is, in effect, a safety valve that lets the capability be distributed widely.
The capability gains are spelled out in concrete terms too. Anthropic cited a real case where a Stripe code migration that used to take about two months was compressed into a single day. The more software engineering you run day to day, the more directly that gap translates into something you can feel.
