Writing a Novel with AI 3: Chapter-by-Chapter Drafting
The single biggest rule when using AI for prose is "don't let it write everything." Limit it to accelerating a rough draft or breaking through a block.
Effective Uses
- Have it produce a rough sketch of a scene, then rewrite it yourself (don't lose your voice)
- Ask it to "add the five senses" where description is thin
- Brainstorm options for "what would be interesting to happen next" (you choose)
- When dialogue sounds expository, discuss more natural phrasing
Protecting Your Voice
- Write the narrative prose yourself (style is authorship). Use AI on the revision side
- Never paste AI text as-is. Always replace it with your own words
- At the end of each chapter, have AI check plot consistency
Caution
Letting AI keep writing produces average, characterless prose. The author is the engine of the writing; AI is a companion and a checker. That is the premise for keeping quality.
