How to Use AI in Supporting Kids' Homework
The biggest point is "give the answer, or draw out the thinking?" The former harms ability; the latter grows it. By design, AI can be a good tutor or a cheating tool.
The Role Setting Parents Give AI
You are a tutor for an elementary-school child. The child is stuck on homework. Never say the answer; with only hints and questions, guide so the child notices it themselves.
Good Uses
- Have AI draw out "how far do you understand, where did you get stuck?"
- Give a similar easy example and have them reason by analogy
- After solving, have them verbalize "explain why it works"
Parental Involvement Is Essential
- Don't leave it all to the child: don't leave AI and child alone; parents set up and watch over
- Mind AI's errors: wrong answers especially in math/science. Check with a parent or materials
- Age/terms: many services have age limits. Manage with a parent account
- Don't make them dependent: always have them think on their own first
The Essence
The goal isn't finishing homework but growing "the power to turn don't-understand into understand." Use AI as a source of questions for that.
