Sora 2 Has Been Discontinued
OpenAI announced the end of Sora on 2026-03-24. The consumer app and web version shut down on 2026-04-26, and the Sora 2 API stops on 2026-09-24. No successor has been announced, so there is no way for a general user to run Sora. To generate video now, pick a service that is still operating: Google Veo, Runway, Kling, Luma and similar.
What Sora 2 Did
Announced at the end of September 2025, Sora 2 turned a text prompt or an image into roughly ten seconds of video with natively generated, synchronized audio. OpenAI pointed to the cost of serving video generation as the reason for shutting it down, which is the practical lesson of the whole episode: video AI is expensive to run, and a given service may not last.
What Video AI Is Good At
- Visualizing ideas (rough video at the planning stage)
- Short staging cuts, backgrounds, transition material
- A storyboard substitute, visuals for presentations

Positioning
Speeding up ideation and short material is still the main use for video AI, but build that workflow on a service that is currently available. Finished long-form work presumes an editing workflow (later chapter) and human staging judgment. Prompt patterns and editing habits transfer between services, so they are worth more than fluency in any single tool.
