The Positioning of AI Chat-Type Mental Care
Replika, Woebot, and the like advertise "mental care through dialogue." Expectations are large, but you must use them understanding their limits and cautions.
Claimed Benefits
- Easing loneliness, someone to talk feelings to
- Some have dialogue design based on cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- An entry point for those with a high psychological barrier to seeing a doctor
Critical Cautions
- Not a substitute for medical care/treatment: it neither diagnoses nor treats
- Dependence/relationship-substitute risk: the danger of replacing human connection
- Crisis response is limited: with intense distress or thoughts of self-harm/harm, go to a specialist line/medical institution, not AI
- Data handling: sensitive conversations. Always confirm the privacy policy
If You Use It
Keep it to "supplementary sorting of feelings," and if the hardship continues/intensifies, always connect to people/specialist agencies. AI can be a bridge but cannot be the body of care.
Chapter Summary
In health/mental areas, consistently "AI = aid for understanding and preparation; judgment and treatment = experts." Keeping this line is the only premise for safely leveraging AI.
