Using AI for Mental Consultation: Benefits and Limits
Talking through feelings with AI has real benefits. At the same time, there are clear limits and dangers. Knowing both correctly and using it accordingly is important.
Benefits
- Verbalize feelings anytime, without being judged
- A trigger for organizing thoughts and noticing cognitive distortions
- Organize your head as a precursor to seeing a doctor/consulting
Limits and Risks (Must Read)
- Not treatment: AI isn't a substitute for a counselor/doctor
- Sycophancy bias: AI leans toward agreement/affirmation and won't necessarily correct dangerous thoughts
- Dependence risk: the danger of making it a substitute for human connection
- Powerless in emergencies: don't rely on AI in crisis situations
What You Must Know
When there is intense despair or thoughts of self-harm/harm, or hardship persists, contact specialist consultation lines, medical institutions, or trusted people without hesitation. In Japan there are public consultation lines such as Inochi no Denwa. AI can be the "bridge" but not the "receiver."
A Healthy Distance
Keep it to "practice partner for organizing feelings"; don't make it a substitute for relationships or treatment. Dedicated mental-care apps are covered next chapter, but the thinking is the same.
