Tripo AI
Overview
Tripo AI generates high-quality 3D models from text or images at high speed. It traces back to research from the VAST team, which released open models like TripoSR, giving Tripo a strong academic foundation. The commercial service emphasizes generating 3D meshes in seconds to tens of seconds and has grown fast as a cost-effective alternative to Meshy.
The current lineup consists of the two model families unveiled at GDC 2026 in March 2026. Tripo H3.1 is the high-fidelity flagship, tuned to maximize input alignment, geometry accuracy, and texture quality across characters, mechanical structures, and complex objects. Smart Mesh P1.0 is a native 3D diffusion model that generates directly in three-dimensional space, optimized for ultra-fast low-poly assets in as little as two seconds — suited to rapid prototyping and gameplay iteration.
Key Features
1. Fast 3D Generation
Text or image inputs produce a 3D mesh in a few to a few dozen seconds. The raw "first draft speed" is a major selling point for prototyping, and per-prompt credit cost tends to be relatively light.
2. Image to 3D
Tripo's Image to 3D — reconstructing geometry from a single image — is especially well-regarded, and continues to improve for well-framed subjects with clean backgrounds. Both photographs and sketches work as input.
3. PBR Textures and Native Quad Meshes
Tripo generates full PBR sets (albedo, normal, metallic, roughness) at up to 8K, and can instead output clean base-color textures for stylized or hand-painted looks. Meshes come out as native quads with artist-quality edge flow, designed to drop into an engine with no retopology step: High Detail mode reaches up to 2M polygons, while Smart Mesh returns topology-optimized assets in the 500–50K polygon range.
4. Auto-Rigging and Smart Segmentation
Characters can be rigged automatically with production-ready skeletons, and smart segmentation splits models into printable parts for 3D printing. Exports cover GLB, FBX, OBJ, USD, STL, and 3MF.
5. API and Web Interface
Beyond the browser-based UI, Tripo exposes an API so you can bake a "generate 3D" button into your own product. DCC Bridge plugins now cover Unity, Blender, Unreal, and Roblox Studio, letting you send models and animations from Tripo Studio to each tool in one click. A partnership with Scenario also adds a workflow that turns AI concept images directly into 3D.
6. Roots in the Open TripoSR Model
Tripo's team, in collaboration with Stability AI, published open research such as TripoSR, and is recognized in the research community. The commercial Tripo AI service builds on top of that research.
Plans & Pricing
Pricing is organized into four credit-based tiers — Free, Pro, Max, and Team. The free allowance is 200 credits per month (roughly 13 models), with top-up credit packs available when that runs out.
| Plan | Price/mo | Credits (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 200 credits/mo (~13 models) |
| Pro | $19.90 ($238.80/yr) | 3,000 credits/mo (~200 models) |
| Max | $89.90 ($1,078.80/yr) | 25,000 credits/mo (~1,660 models) |
| Team | $109.90/seat | 90,000 credits/mo (~6,000 models) |
Top-up packs are sold at $10 for 1,000 credits, $100 for 12,000, $500 for 62,000, and $1,000 for 130,000.

Typical Use Cases
- Game dev: first drafts of background props and enemies at scale, plus low-poly assets for gameplay testing
- Metaverse / VR: rapid prototyping of avatars and props
- 3D printing: figures and goods produced with smart part segmentation
- E-commerce: generate 3D previews from a single product photo
- Education: quickly spin up 3D teaching materials
Strengths
- ✅ Strong Image-to-3D quality and speed
- ✅ Two model families to pick from — high-fidelity H3.1 and ultra-fast low-poly Smart Mesh P1.0
- ✅ PBR textures up to 8K on native quad meshes
- ✅ Cost-efficient credit consumption per generation
- ✅ API available for easy product integration
- ✅ Common 3D formats supported (GLB / FBX / OBJ / USD / STL / 3MF)
Weaknesses
- ❌ Text-to-3D results are still more hit-or-miss than image input
- ❌ Complex mechanical parts, architecture, and engraved text tend to break
- ❌ The free tier's 200 credits/month (~13 models) runs out quickly on high-detail work
- ❌ Documentation (especially in Japanese) is thin; learning curve is higher
