Overview

Notion AI is the AI assistant embedded directly inside Notion, the all-in-one workspace for docs, wikis, databases, and task management. Unlike standalone AI writing tools, Notion AI understands the entire context of your workspace—pages, databases, and connected tools alike. The current release is Notion 3.6 (July 1, 2026), which pairs Custom Agents and Ask Notion cross-workspace search with an External Agents API that lets you invite outside AI agents such as Claude Code or Cursor in as teammates. Primary audience: teams of any size that use Notion as their internal knowledge backbone.

Key Features

1. Ask Notion (Cross-Workspace Q&A)

Search and summarize information across every Notion page, wiki, and database, plus connected tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitHub, and Google Drive. Every answer includes source links back to the original content.

2. Custom Agents

Custom Agents let teams build AI workflows tailored to their processes. Example: automatically extract action items from meeting notes and file them into a task database. They can be triggered when an AI Meeting Note finishes, automating post-meeting work like updating trackers, sharing recaps, and filing tickets, and you can hand a page or database straight to an agent from the Share menu.

3. External Agents API and Developer Platform

An API for inviting outside AI agents (Claude Code, Cursor) into the workspace as teammates, assigning them tasks, and monitoring progress. Workers give those agents a JS/TS code-execution environment for real queries and external API calls, and agents can drop interactive HTML blocks — ROI calculators, quizzes, org charts — straight into a page.

4. Multi-Model Access

Business and Enterprise plans bundle multiple LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) through a single interface. You can pick the best model per task without maintaining separate ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Gemini subscriptions. Model choice is now a short curated list with scorecards comparing speed, intelligence, and cost, and favourites can be pinned.

5. Email and Calendar Handled by Agents

Connectors now cover Outlook Mail and Calendar alongside Gmail, so agents can triage the inbox, draft replies, and manage scheduling. The standalone Notion Mail client is being retired on September 22, 2026 — Notion says more than half its users were already managing mail without opening the inbox — and anything stored only in Notion Mail (drafts, snippets, scheduled sends) must be exported by September 21.

6. Inline Writing Assistance

Continue writing, summarize, translate, or shift tone with one click inside any Notion page. Drafting and refining stay entirely within Notion.

The standalone AI add-on is gone and the seat price is the AI price — with one exception: autonomous Custom Agent runs are metered at $10 per 1,000 Notion credits per month, pooled across the workspace and with no rollover. Since August 3, 2026, AI consumption has its own view in Settings, tracked against both a rolling six-hour window and a monthly window tied to your billing cycle.

• No AI features on Free or Plus plans
• Complex database design still requires human modeling
• Heavy Custom Agent use adds metered credit charges on top of seats, making the monthly bill hard to predict
