Overview
Duolingo Max is the top tier of Duolingo, adding AI conversation practice to the world's largest language learning app — real-time AI dialogue and scenario roleplay layered on top of the usual gamified lessons. Since Explain My Answer was opened up to all users in January 2026, the genuinely Max-only features are now Video Call and Roleplay.
Key Features
Video Call
Real-time video call practice with Duolingo character Lily. Travel, work, and daily conversation scenarios. It covers nine languages — English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Portuguese, Korean, Japanese and Chinese — and remains exclusive to Max. Free and Super users see the entry point in the app but must upgrade to use it.
Roleplay
AI conversation practice in various scenarios:

Explain My Answer
When you get a problem wrong, AI explains in detail why that answer is correct — grammar rules, word nuances, exceptions. Once a Max perk, it is now available to every user including the free tier.
